There was noise outside the door and she heard her father talking, but her head was spinning when she came to. On his knees next to her, Danny said, “Let me get you to a chair.”

“No! Don’t touch me!” She managed to sit up in time to see her Dad come into the room. He physically pushed Dan to the side.

“Baby, are you all right?”

A horrible thought dawned. Had she and Hannah listened to him, let him investigate Hannah’s new hire, the whole situation wouldn’t have happened. So, she found the strength to say, “I’m okay, Daddy.” He clasped her arm, helped her stand and sit again on her desk chair which was the closest. Ludicrously she picked up her tea and sipped. It was cold.

Her father straightened. “We have a lot to discuss.”

Sasha noticed now two other men had entered the office.

“Honey, this is Jay Stewart, the head of the Secret Service.”

“Ma’am,” he said formally.

“And this is Mike Connelly from the FBI.”

“Hello, Ms. Masters.”

“Hello. Why are you here?”

“Because this has become a matter of homeland security,” her dad said. “And they think we can help them catch the perpetrators who murdered Emmett Ellis.”

“You know for sure he was murdered?” Dan asked hoarsely.

“The medical examiner did the autopsy as soon as we got involved.” The agent’s distaste for Dan was obvious. “We got the results before we left for Rockford. They found a lethal medication in his system that mimics heart attack symptoms.”

“Who did it?” Dan asked.

Connelly answered. “We don’t know. We have to look at all the people you exposed and who were arrested because of the dirt you dug up, but we are aware of the one who got out of jail.”

“Bobby Competti.” Dan breathed out the word.

“Yes. Since he might be involved, we’ll bring in the head of the New York State Organized Crime Unit. We think Bobby’s working with what’s left of the family. His father is in prison, but unfortunately, he can dictate orders from there.”

Dad said, “I’m not sure what you’re saying here, asking us to do, Mike.”

“We want your family to help us catch him, Jim, which would lead to a final take down of the largest crime family in the country. And before you go off, I’ll tell you how we can keep your daughters safe.”

“This better be good.”

“Danny Larson will stay on as Hannah’s farmhand, but she’ll hire another. An agent. The woman will pose as her long-lost college friend, come to stay with Hannah for an indefinite amount of time.”

Hannah’s shoulders sagged.

“Danny will carry a gun.”

“He isn’t trained to protect her like an agent,” Dad said.

“He’s had firearm training and has a license to carry a pistol. He recertifies it every five years. Also, two others will be assigned to Sasha. One will stay in the house. Another will surreptitiously guard her at work and pretend to date her.”

Dan moaned.

Sasha and Hannah were wide-eyed.

It was Karen who stepped forward. “No way will my daughters be bait for some mobster.
